1) Overview

The programme of English language was firstly a part of Modern European Languages department, which was established in 1966/1967 with the beginning of the Faculty of Arts. The major aim of the department was to teach English and French languages to the students of Omdurman Islamic University in order to help them to be able to read English and French publications, which were full of faults and misconceptions about Islam and Muslims. In addition, to prepare graduates who were could communicate with Muslims from non-Arabic speaking countries and the other regional and international cultures besides their Islamic and Arabic one.

In 1973, the department of Modern European Languages divided into two departments, English language and literature and French language and literature. Since then, the department has been offering courses of English language and literature. In addition, great efforts were exerted such staff development and training, curriculum design and resources, have been spent to develop and improve outcome of the department. Throughout its history, a number of highly qualified and professional professors and lecturers, both national and international, joined this department as full-timers or part-timers. Their contribution is still sounding and this is clearly seen in the great number of the graduates.

Now, the department offers courses of linguistics of English language including phonetics, phonology, syntax and semantics. In addition, courses of modern British and contemporary American literature, literary criticism are also taught. Moreover, the department is also shouldering the teaching of English as university requirement to the faculties, institutes and centers of the university and its branches inside and outside Khartoum state.

This syllabus is primarily designed to help the students to develop their language proficiency by providing them with adequate and varied learning opportunities for practice. It also intends to expose the students to authentic, integrated, graded and developed materials, which are presented in the courses, activities and exercises. Additionally, to develop their language learning strategies by exposing them to the required learning skills, activities and knowledge,

2) Objectives

  1. To enable the students to develop their language proficiency in the four skills- listening, reading, speaking and writing
  2. To provide the students  with adequate and varied learning opportunities so as to develop their communicative competence
  3. To expose the students to authentic, integrated, graded and developed materials, which are presented in the courses, activities and exercises
  4. To develop the learners' learning strategies and autonomy by exposing them to a variety of critical thinking and creative thinking activities.

 

 

3) Programme Structure

 

The structure of the degree of the BA in English language and literature is based on the balanced distribution of the department requirements (41 courses) and the university requirements (16 courses) as specified by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Omdurman Islamic University. The duration of the programme is 4 years distributed in 8 semesters (see the study plan).Table (1) below shows the distribution of the courses and credit hours

4) Testing, Assessment and Evaluation

 

The students are subjected to a continuous assessment during the semester However, each course marks should be distributed as follows:

The students' final assessment and evaluation is based on the GPA format, which is calculated for each semester or all semesters together.
